Still alive!

So California has not killed me, despite its best efforts. I have developed some reasonably frequent migraines, and I fell off my bike the other day, but aside from that, I'm doing alright.
I am currently delaying going out to the grocery store/pharmacy, because it is TWENTY NINE DEGREES outside right now. What is that all about? It's mid-October! The only things that are signalling to me that is is, in fact, mid-October, are the pumpkins, Halloween costumes, aaaand, that's about it. I have been cooking pumpkins and pumpkin seeds and soups and smoothies and tofu.
Shamus and I got a fantastic blender a little less than a week ago, and except for today (due to a lack of ingredients), I think I have used it about 5 times a day every day since. Yesterday I used it for two smoothies, a marinade, and chopping onions and garlic. We have made ice cream (accidentally), milkshakes, pumpkin puree, and soup in it. The blades of the thing go SO FAST that if you let it run for about 4-6 minutes, you get a steaming hot bowl of soup without turning on the stove. I have plans for making coconut butter, tahini, and all manner of other things in it. I am totally in love with my blender.
I have been reading books voraciously, including one that made me switch to veganism due to a rather uncomfortable education. Don't worry though, I'm a pretty quiet vegan, and I'm not going to start screaming about you eating a hamburger or anything. I just think that it's too difficult to find meat, dairy, and eggs from an ethical source, so it's easier to be vegan. Shamus doesn't mind, though he still eats animal products at work, or when we go out for dinner, he doesn't cook a separate meat-based meal for himself. He continues to drink dairy, and eat cheese, but he is super helpful about helping me read labels at the grocery store, and figuring out ways to make it reasonable to buy an entire loaf of bread for himself when I won't eat it (freezer bags and space in the freezer are very helpful).
We've also signed up for a Community Supported Agriculture box. We've learned to make ratatouille, figured out things to do with rainbow chard, been baffled by mysterious but delicious melons, and discovered that turnip greens really don't last very long in the fridge. Tomroow we are scheduled to get two things that I am excited about: jujubees and cranberry beans. We're also getting some red russian kale (whatever), some arugula (well frig), some tomatoes (oh god, all of the tomatoes, we've gotten something like 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks), an acorn squash (yummy), and some tokyo turnips (hm, more turnip greens). I have to decide this weekend if we want to continue it. I think we probably should, if for no other reason than it gets us out of making the same things all the time, and tunes us into the changing seasons when otherwise all we are seeing is "it's hot and sunny, just like the last 3 months." I should probably give them a call and get set up for that.
Anyway, I need to go find some Advil or something, and see if I can stare down the temperature.
